Silent Thief

Written by A. R. Levett

Highly Commended Award in 2011 Talus Prize

Published in Something is Happening Vol. 2 (2011)

It begins
as delicious disobedience,
creeping in unseen.

Concealed by debris
it redecorates the grotto,
filches treasures,
and obfuscates reflections.

Eventually
fissures crack open,
mountains collapse into mirages,
lava slithers into laughter;
basilicas are sacrificed.

Soon
your star fades,
schools disperse;
infernos and whispers
become derelicts;
your once spirited sanctuary
a muted sepulchre.
