Suburban Crawl

Written by A. R. Levett

Published in Petrichor (2025)

On the adjacent street
the crunch of branches
fills the air

as saws and axes
plunge into white wood flesh
chainsaws roar to life

the scent of petroleum
wafts towards us
on the breeze.

Leafy branches
whoosh in freefall
crash to earth,

cranes whir and splutter
as they pull, tug, wrench
on naked trunks

clinging to nutrient-rich soil
silent silhouettes
stripped of life.

Humans hammer
at sturdy roots sustaining
decades of growth.

A final
fungi-recoiling snap
echoes towards

me and my comrades
fearful the fate
befalling our fellow white gums

will befall us.
