Social Commentary on a Political Monster

Written by A. R. Levett

Published in Brushstrokes VI (2025)

Inspired by ‘Everyman’s Poetry’ by Emily Dickinson

Chalky sun drifts across silver ocean winds
a stapled felon stirs rapture
his soulless shackle tongued horror.

His putrid message wafts across supercilious seas
billows over mountaintops
noon rhapsody, lunacy.

Satin serpent figure is the slimiest target
driving unfrequented roads
at this sleepy way station.

His pageantry worth no more
than rusty golden guineas
summer’s sister seraph is the missing troubadour.

This angel’s wagon is a prospect transcendental
for even keenest marksmen
the satyr’s fingers beckon.

Maple’s blossom, evening spires
and crimson dusty skies
offer solemn succour to this unrepentant prig.

I want to subtract myself
hide the eternity tree
from this pickpocketed heaven
this altar of intent.

Flattened birds and velvet beads
to this discerning eye
unless undressed these twitching jaws
will ripen juicily.
