The most interesting answers will go into a draw to win a hard cover copy of Stephen King's On Writing. Draw closes 5pm AWST 31 March 2015. The judge's decision is final. Please supply an email address with your comment so I can contact you to arrange postage if you are the winner. Open to Australian residents only. The most relevant to me is tip #5: “The most important things are the hardest things to say,” writes King. “They are the things you get ashamed of because words diminish your feelings.” Most great pieces of writing are preceded with hours of thought. In King’s mind, “Writing is refined thinking.” This is because I find speech is inadequate for expressing how I feel about my experiences. Writing them down not only allows me to find the right words to express myself but it allows me to refine what I mean. |

#10 - Master the art of description. I have been trying to nail this since 1985. The closer I get, the more I realize I could be doing it better, more poetically, in a more rhythmic way, in a less rhythmic way, in a more conversational way, in a more focused way, in a less focused way - the way I see things, the way my characters see things... Arrghhhhh.
